AREAS OF SPECIALIZATION IN NURSING

Nursing is very broad and below is a list where you can choose a particular field you would want to specialize in after you have trained at basic level.

  1. Midwifery: 

A midwife is a trained health professional who helps women during labor, delivery and after the birth of their babies. Midwives may deliver babies at birthing centers or at home, but most can also deliver babies at a hospital.

  1. Maternal and Child Health Nurse: 

This profession is similar to the above, but there are some differences. The nurses care for mothers and babies before, during, and also after delivery until the children start school.

  1. Community/Public Health Nursing: 

Here the nurses trained to cater to community health such as communicable diseases. You also get involved in activities like immunization and the rest.

  1. Paediatric Nursing: 

They are nurses that are trained to take care of ill or injured children.

Mental Health/Psychiatric Nursing:

The nurses are trained to take care of people who are mentally ill.

  1. Accident and Emergency Nursing:

They are specially trained to offer immediate care for people with injuries from any kind of accident or emergency.

Theatre/Peri-operative Nursing:

The nurses are specialists in working in theatre with surgeons while they conduct operations.

Ophthalmic Nursing:

Ophthalmic Nursing is a specialist field that focuses on comprehensive eye care for the promotion of eye health and the prevention of visual impairment and blindness.

Critical/Intensive care Nursing : 

These nurses are equipped to provide care of patients that are critically ill and need intensive care as well as monitoring.

10· Geriatric Nursing:

A geriatric nurse cares for the elderly. They focus on the development and implementation of treatment plans for chronic illnesses, including diabetes, hypertension and respiratory disorders.

11· Occupational Health Nursing: 

These nurses are trained to cater to the health of workers in workplaces, as well as protect them from work hazards and other injuries.

12· Orthopaedic Nursing: 

These are nurses specially trained to care for persons with illnesses or injuries to muscles and bones.

13· Lecturer in Nursing (Academia): 

Here you don’t work with patients, you become a nursing tutor, a lecturer and a professor. You offer your services in nursing colleges and universities.
